ABOUT US

We have been farming since returning from Peace Corps service as agriculture volunteers in Madagascar in 2002.  We began as partners at Gardens of Paradise in Pittsboro, NC, while Shiloh took sustainable agriculture courses at Central Carolina Community College and Jason began working with conventional farmers at RAFI-USA.

In 2003, Melvin Whitfield invited us to farm an idle piece of land beside the horse pasture and the pond at his third generation farm in White Cross, NC.  After a couple of years here, we began to pine for Appalachia and a place to put down roots.  After three years of a rollercoaster ride of a land search we found this beautiful piece of land here in Millers Creek. Now we have put down roots, literally and figuratively.  Tumbling Shoals Farm has become our home and our way of life.

WE LOVE GROWING FOOD

There's something inherently satisfying in providing our community with  good wholesome organic food.  Plus we love working with our hands and being outside and eating fresh!

Our growing practices

We are a certified organic farm, certified by CCOF. Everything we grow is grown according to the USDA organic standards.  The word "organic" is a legal term controlled by the USDA and requires third party verification of our growing practices to use it.
What is Organic?
Organic farming is a whole system approach to producing food.  We consider the effect of our farming practices on the land, the food, the local community and the wider environment (including Tumbling Shoals Creek!).  Here at Tumbling Shoals Farm we focus on building healthy soils for healthy plants, encouraging biodiversity on the farm, natural plant nutrition, natural pest management through crop rotation, diversity and natural pest enemies.

The most common question we get is "what do you do about the bugs?"  In our organic system, we try to maintain a balance that keeps pest populations at a minimum.  Organic is not simply substituting organic sprays for conventional sprays, but rather preventing problems by promoting the health and balance of the whole system.

Integrity is a large part of our farm system and we try to be as transparent as possible when it comes to how we grow your food.  Come out to the farm and see how we do it!  Also feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or concerns you might have.
Here at Tumbling Shoals Farm we value community and sustainability.  Our mission is to sustainably feed our community the highest quality organic fruits and vegetables. Find out where to purchase our produce, meet the farmily, or wax poetic with the farm blog.
